How Bridge Scoring Works
Contract bridge scoring can be complex. This calculator handles both duplicate and rubber bridge scoring conventions, including trick points, bonuses for games and slams, overtricks, undertricks, and doubled/redoubled contracts.
Understanding the Results
- Trick Score: Points for tricks bid and made (20-30 per trick depending on suit, 40 for first NT trick +30 thereafter)
- Bonus Points: Game bonus (300/500 non-vul/vul), slam bonuses (500/750 for small slam, 1000/1500 for grand slam), and part-score bonus (50)
- Overtricks: Extra tricks beyond contract — doubled/redoubled increase significantly
- Undertricks: Penalty points awarded to defenders when contract fails — higher penalties for vulnerability and doubles
Scoring Reference
- Minor suits (♣/♦): 20 points per trick • Game = 100+ (5 tricks = 100)
- Major suits (♥/♠): 30 points per trick • Game = 100+ (4 tricks = 120)
- No Trump (NT): 40 for first trick, 30 thereafter • Game = 100+ (3 tricks = 100)
- Doubled (X): Trick and overtrick scores doubled; undertrick penalties increase significantly
- Redoubled (XX): All doubled scores multiplied by 2 (effectively 4× original)
Bonus Structure
- Part-score: 50 points (when below game)
- Game (non-vulnerable): 300 points
- Game (vulnerable): 500 points
- Small Slam (6-level) non-vul: 500 points
- Small Slam (6-level) vulnerable: 750 points
- Grand Slam (7-level) non-vul: 1000 points
- Grand Slam (7-level) vulnerable: 1500 points
Overtrick & Undertrick Values
- Undoubled undertricks: 50 non-vul / 100 vul per trick
- Doubled undertricks (non-vul): 100, 300, 500, 800, 1100, 1400... (escalating)
- Doubled undertricks (vul): 200, 600, 1000, 1400, 1800, 2200...
- Redoubled: Double the doubled penalty (2× doubled values)
Frequently Asked Questions
- What's the difference between duplicate and rubber scoring? — This calculator uses duplicate scoring (game bonuses only). Rubber bridge adds additional bonuses for winning a rubber.
- How is game determined? — Game is achieved when trick score reaches 100+ points. Minors need 5 tricks (100), majors need 4 tricks (120), NT needs 3 tricks (100).
- What about honors bonuses? — Not included in duplicate scoring. This calculator focuses on ACBL duplicate standards.
- How does vulnerability affect scoring? — Vulnerability increases bonuses (for game/slams) and increases penalties (undertricks).
- Can this be used for Chicago scoring? — Yes, Chicago (four-deal bridge) uses duplicate scoring conventions.
